Dental Cleanings
-
This service, performed by a Registered Dental Hygienist, removes plaque, stains, tartar and odor from the oral cavity. The ADA recommends a routine dental cleaning twice a year.
Benefits- Routine cleanings are crucial to preventing tooth decay and gum disease. According to research done by the ADA, gum disease (or periodontitis) affects almost half of adults over 30 in the U.S.; however, it can affect people of any age. Periodontitis can worsen over time and is one of the number one causes of tooth loss. Gum disease progresses rapidly and causes loss of bone and tissue.
Perio Scaling and Root Planing
-
Scaling is a thorough and deep cleaning of the teeth, removing plaque and tartar from both above and below the gumline. This service may require anesthesia or multiple visits. Rootplaning maintains healthy gums of patients who suffer from periodontitis and aids in smoothing the tooth surface and reattaching the gum tissue to the teeth.
Full Mouth Debridement
-
The American Dental Association defines debridement as "Removal of subgingival and/or supragingival plaque and calculus which obstructs the ability to perform an evaluation." This service is a gross removal of plaque and calculus and may be required before a dentist can perform an oral examination.
Periodic Exams
-
Exams performed by a dentist should be performed at least once a year to screen for tooth decay, periodontal disease and oral cancer.
Dental Radiographs
-
Radiographs are used in the diagnostic portion of a preventative care appointment to screen for or maintain diseases or disorder of the mouth and jaw.
Sealants
-
Pits and fissures can be found on the occlusal or chewing surface of the posterior teeth. These anatomic features make it difficult to remove food and bacteria from the back molars. Sealants are a plastic coating that adheres to the chewing surface of the teeth to stop bacteria and food from settling.
Benefits - According to the ADA, sealants reduce the risk of decay on the posterior molars by 80%. Both adults and children can receive sealants: however, sealants are recommended as soon as the adult molars come in.
Fluoride Treatment
-
During this service fluoride is applied directly to the teeth.
